O'Dea High School's cross-country team is on the verge of something special, and at the heart of this pursuit stands a quiet but determined leader, Seku. A senior and the team captain, Seku has embarked on his fourth and final season with one clear goal in mind: to lead O'Dea to state glory.
It hasn't been an easy journey for Seku and his teammates. They've faced stiff competition, especially from Bishop Blanchet High School, who have consistently bested them in every meet. But Seku isn't one to back down from a challenge; he's determined to change the narrative this year.
"We haven't won anything as a team yet," Seku admits with a glint of determination in his eyes. "But ideally, the number one goal anybody has is to go to state. So that's always on our list."
Seku understands that the road to state is a demanding one, with hurdles to clear along the way. "First, we gotta get past metros, which I think we have a pretty good shot at doing," he says optimistically. "And then we had to get through districts, which is a bit more challenging, but anything's possible."
Despite his reserved nature, Seku willingly accepted the role of team captain. "I asked my coach not to make me captain due to my semi-quiet and shy personality," he admits. "But I told him, 'You can make me see you this year. You can make me a captain.' So, he made me captain."
As captain, Seku has had to step out of his comfort zone. "I'm more of the lead-by-example type," he confesses. "But I've been having to, you know, get out of my comfort zone and actually communicate more, which isn't my strength. But I think for the most part, it's going pretty well."
Seku's leadership style, though unconventional, is making an impact. His dedication to his teammates, combined with his relentless drive to succeed, has the O'Dea cross country team rallying behind him. With Seku at the helm, O'Dea High School is inching closer to that elusive state championship.
As the season unfolds, all eyes are on Seku and his teammates, united in their pursuit of greatness. With Seku's leadership, O'Dea High School's cross-country dreams may very well become a reality, proving that even the quietest of leaders can make the loudest impact.
