Beards for Bros is Back!

Updated: Mar 1

by Jacob Fugaro

Beards for Bros is a tradition that honors the memories of a courageous student who fought cancer and gives a feeling of brotherhood that has taken root in the classrooms of O'Dea High School.

More than just a fundraising event, Beards for Bros brings the O'Dea community together to honor a fellow student who displayed incredible bravery in the face of struggles. Beards for Bros is a way to support people battling cancer and raise money for cancer research.

The idea is straightforward yet effective: students pay 100 dollars to grow out their beards over a predetermined amount of time. While this happens, another revenue stream is collecting money by selling products with specific designs towards beards for bros, which you will be allowed to wear on O'Dea Fridays.

It begins with a clean shave, and you are allowed to grow out your beard until the end of the beard of bros. The Students who have already donated a certain amount of money proudly wear a type of O'Dea free dress on Fridays to show their support for the cause throughout the event.

The main highlight is after the Beards for Bros event when students from O'Dea's sister school, Holy Names Academy, arrive to judge the beards in different categories.

These categories, which range from "Best Attempt" to "Best Overall Beard,"  give a vibrant, competitive feel that draws students in and increases participation.

Beards for Bros is a tribute to the strength of the O'Dea brotherhood. Beyond the fun competition, it supports the students in more ways that can be explained. Beard for Bros is a time to have our school stand out.

Diego Hernandez '24 said, "Beards for bros is a lot of fun, and I look forward to it every year because no other school does anything like it."

It is a reminder that O'Dea High School has something unique to make a significant difference, even in tragedy. Students from O'Dea High School pay respect to a fellow student's memory while also supporting the ongoing battle against cancer.

Beards for Bros highlights O'Dea High School's ability to respond to tragedy in a way that makes a stronger bond within the school. This is a standout ability that not many other schools have.
