You might typically think of O'Dea students spending their time after school at sports practices or in the weight room with Coach P. Recently, however, we have added a new menu of activities to do.

First there is Makers Club held in Room 212. There are 3D printers, laser cutters, and other fabrication tools. They meet after school on Mondays. If you are unable to make it, Dr. Giesen is available every day in room 212 to help you use the tools.

Next, we have the Chess Club. The Chess Club was created this year. Juniors Cormac Hummel and Will Martin are the founders and leaders of this club. I interviewed Cormac to tell me about the club and how it has been going so far. Hummel says chess club has “been a lot of fun.” I asked Cormac, what was his motive to the create this club and he said, “I wanted to create a chess club because I have seen a lot of my classmates playing chess before and I thought that it would be a good addition to the club rotation at O'Dea because he it would get a lot of members.” So far, he is right as the club has over 20 members. The club has created very good bonding time according to Hummel. He states, “the chess club is being able to bond with brothers from all grade levels and to be able to play together to improve our skills.” The meetings for Chess Club are on C club rotation. Hummel says they hope to meet as soon as possible but it’s hard to get a specific date. He states, “I'm excited to finally get started and hopefully enter our school into chess competitions in the future.” Meetings for the club are also held after Tuesday for people who like to do homework during Irish Block days. They meet in room 303.

The last after-school activity is Weekly Service. Every Wednesday after school there is a service opportunity for all students. They do service like working at the Cathedral Kitchen, cleaning up around the neighborhood, working with the senior centers in the neighborhood, and other great opportunities. I talked to O’Dea Junior Campbell McNulty who has participated in every after-school service opportunity so far. I talked to him about what they have done so far. He said, “The first week Ms Vaccari led it and we made a poster for catholic schools week. We made it by using sticky notes and making a big cross. The second week we started by folding the papers for mass then we wrote cards to kids with cancer for the start of beards for bros. The last two weeks Mr. Dobbs led us, and we went around the area around school and picked up trash.” O'Dea after school service is a great way to help your community and get service hours for students.

These are just a few of O’Dea’s great activities but the newest on the menu.
