SEATTLE-- In the young morning, while most high school students are still snug in their beds, Grayson Bromfield is already embarking on a unique and challenging journey. A senior at O’Dea High School, Bromfield is not just an outstanding lacrosse player but a dedicated scholar, making his mark both on and off the field. However, his path to success is no ordinary one. It involves a daily ferry ride that adds an extra layer of determination to his already packed schedule.

Born on Bainbridge Island, Bromfield spent his formative years there, attending school from kindergarten to eighth grade. However, when it came time for high school, he made the decision to join O’Dea for its renowned lacrosse program. This choice meant a significant change in his daily routine, with his day starting at the early hour of 5:30 am to catch the morning ferry.
"I wake up early and get home late. And I have to manage sports, school, and getting home," acknowledging the demanding nature of his daily commute.
One struggle he faces with this commute is missing out on social events causing him to sometimes feel left out. Yet, this dedicated athlete doesn't let the challenges deter him. Instead, he draws strength from a strong support system, particularly his parents, who continually emphasize the importance of O’Dea in shaping his future.
"I stay motivated by my parents; they always tell me how O’Dea has benefited me and how important it is for me. And that sticks with me, I use that to get up in the morning and to get my work done."
Bromfield utilizes the ferry ride as a time for reflection, using it to plan and mentally prepare for the day ahead.
Living on an island has imparted valuable lessons to Bromfield, shaping him into a young man with qualities of patience, kindness, competitiveness, outgoingness, and caring. These traits extend beyond his personal life and resonate in both the classroom and on the lacrosse field. Despite the ferry ride that separates him from his school, Bromfield remains a committed presence at all workouts and practices.
Teammate Oscar Clark attests to Bromfield's unwavering dedication, highlighting his commitment to attending school even after a demanding game. To ensure he doesn't miss out, Bromfield stays with his dad in a hotel overnight, showcasing a level of dedication that has not gone unnoticed by his peers.
"He’s a dedicated guy, always at workouts, always competing, you'll never catch him complaining. He’s finally getting the rewards for his hard work," praises Clark, shedding light on the fruits of Bromfield's labor.
Looking ahead, Bromfield's journey is set to continue as he heads to Colorado College in the fall to pursue both his academic and lacrosse careers. The skills and self-reliance he has developed through his daily commute will undoubtedly serve him well in the future, setting him apart from his peers.
