SEATTLE- “Boxing is one of those things that has been linked to the Finestone name,'' Harrison Finestone stated.
Finestone, an O’Dea junior, has been involved in boxing since he was very young. This sport runs in his family and blood, from his father owning a boxing gym to his family boxing in Israel, with some even becoming professional.
Boxing has taught Finestone numerous lessons. He discovered that this is a sport of discipline.
"Boxing gives you a sense of discipline," Finestone explained.
Boxing's work and dedication have influenced Finestone in other aspects of his life, such as academics or the decision to go to the gym alone rather than with friends in order to get better, stronger, faster, and to make weight.
Finestone, who moved from Los Angeles just prior to have starting his freshman year at O’Dea, has considered boxing in the future. He has considered some college with boxing gyms or clubs, which is something he looks for when choosing a university. Finestone is unsure if he wants to pursue the sport professionally, but he is not entirely opposed to the idea.
''I don't necessarily have a goal of making it pro in the future, and if it doesn't happen, that's fine; it's all for the love of the sport,’’ Finestone explained.
If going pro is not an option for Finestone, he will simply continue to box because it is his passion.
By creating new, lasting relationships with other young people in the gym, boxing at Sea Mar Boxing Club has given Finestone access to a sense of community. In an effort to raise awareness of the uniqueness of boxing, Finestone regularly welcomes visitors to the gym.
"I think everyone should box, regardless of gender, race, or size, because it's a form of self-empowerment," Finestone stated.
Finestone's current self has been shaped by boxing, both physically and mentally and it's evident that his ideals align with the sport. values of community, competition, and discipline. Every day between five and seven o'clock, Finestone may be found at Sea Mar Boxing Club punching bags, performing hundreds of crunches, or creating new maneuvers to execute on his skip rope. This sport is more than simply a sport to Finestone. For him, it's a method to express himself, a gateway to a vast community, and a novel approach to making new acquaintances. Finestone will continue his family's boxing tradition in the future.
