In the big city of Seattle, Derek, a 17-year-old O’Dea Gentleman, makes his commute from Poulsbo to Seattle by car and ferry. It’s a cloudy day, a common occurrence here, nothing like the sunny weather in Guatemala, where his roots originate from. After his long commute to First Hill, he steps off the bus and gets ready for his day full of two things he loves: learning and running. His journey with O'Dea began in the 7th grade with a tour that left a lasting impression, leading him to officially join the school as a freshman. 2His passion for Cross Country and Track has proved effective in helping him find his place in the world. He enjoys going to football games, and sets an example for the under classmen, both in and out of the classroom. Derek loves giving back to his community, as shown in his active participation at Fishline, a local food bank in Poulsbo. His choice to come to O'Dea was influenced by the idea of a strong and unified brotherhood and the positive experiences he gained during his visit in 7th grade.
