In response to the conflicts occurring in the Middle East and the sadness we all feel for those affected by violence in that region, Mr. Kaden’s Freshman Introduction to Art class has been focusing on creating an environment of peace and mutual respect in the classroom. During the first portion of the school year so far, much of what the students have been making in Art has been created individually by each member of the class on their own. Working collaboratively with one another, however, with a single goal in mind, was a new experience for these O’Dea brothers. That goal: working together to create a symbol of peace, keeping the regions of Israel and Palestine in mind.
While visiting the Middle East, a symbol you likely will see in many shops and households is that of a Hamsa – Arabic word for “five”, which is a single open hand with fingers pressed together, and palm outstretched. This is a symbol with deep rooted meaning in Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and other major world religions. The palm facing downward represents abundance, prosperity, gratitude, and generosity, while upward, a symbol of protection against the destructive emotions of hate and anger. Another interpretation simply as the “helping hand”, or God’s willingness to help his people and direct them out of struggle.
This Hamsa as a universal symbol for the protection of all, was the basis for the project you see below. Students worked in groups of two or three in the creation of their design, while contemplating how they are contributing to an environment of peace within the walls of O’Dea and beyond.

“This symbolizes to me the hand of God protecting me and others and extending out to spread peace and prosperity to everyone.”

“We both bring laughs and happiness into the school and atmosphere. We bring good vibes and smiles everyday no matter what is going on. We tried to reflect this onto our piece with different symbols on what we believe to bring peace to people. Everyone should be at peace.”

“This project symbolizes togetherness, because my partner and I are working on making a project that promotes peace.”
