Irish Tennis Preview

irishsportsnetwork

SEATTLE - On a sunny day last spring at Volunteer Park, with family and friends packed along the fence, the struggling O'Dea tennis team dropped another loss, finishing the season 2-10. This year, the team brings back talent and a new coach to bring hope and energy, which has been lacking, to the tennis team.

The Past Season

The Irish struggled in their independent matches the past season finishing 18-42 placing them 15th in Metro last year. Last season has been said to be a growth year by the team as most players were new and still going through learning struggles.

“Last year we didn't have the best season. We had challenges with a lot of new guys playing, but we pushed through,” junior tennis player Phineas Petersen said.

Key Returners

The top returning players are Cormac Hummel, Anbin Keen, and Kobe Williams. They also bring in new and exciting prospects such as Hudson White, Zach Schuyler, and even some new freshman talent.

What to look forward to

The Irish are bringing in a new coach Jennifer Wood, a sister to an O’Dea alum, Coach Wood is a certified PTR and PPR instructor. This isn't her first time coaching as she comes from an assiant coach role at Garfield and Bishop Blanchet. The knowledge and coach credibly is what the Irish needed for the upcoming tennis season. They return talent while they also are looking forward to learning skills they haven’t and a fresh start.

"Our new coach has a lot to teach us and I'm just excited to learn from her, " Petersen said.

With an older roster with a new coach the Irish expect to be better this season looking to move past metros would be a huge success for the Irish.

“Anyone advancing past Metro’s in the postseason would be great. More than that though, we are looking to have fun and get better,” Senior Adam Kloeppel
