From JV basketball to rowing superstar

By: Xavier Moimoi

SEATTLE—Nate Stoulil spent his whole life shooting a basketball, making layups, and rebounding the ball for his team. All of that changed sophomore year for Stoulil when he was benched on JV (Junior Varsity). Stoulil’s life then took a big change as this move encouraged him to make a major change in sports.

Stoulil would then go on to decide to switch from basketball to rowing.

Stoulil stated, “This is the best decision I’ve ever made.”

Although switching from a school sport to a club sport, Stoulil still made sure to keep O’Dea’s high school strength and conditioning Coach Paynter by his side. This was because of Paynter’s ability to push Stoulil to be the best athlete he could be.

Stoulil states, “The hard work that I learned from Coach P translated over.”

Making the switch from one sport to another is never easy let alone basketball to rowing. These are two different sports that require different things.

But switching sports also requires a lot of hard work from an individual in such a short period. Also forgetting that Stoulil doesn’t do this for fun and Stoulil competes in tournaments for rowing.

Although rowing is a different sport from other sports. The sport itself still runs off of fundamentals just like any other sport.

Lucky for Stoulil he was able to run into a good set of coaches. These coaches would be able to push Stoulil above his limits even when he didn’t want to go any further.

Stoulil adds, “The advice they give is very technically based. There is a lot that goes into the rowing stroke, and they remind me of all the little tweaks I got to make to have the most efficient stroke.”

Stoulil also isn’t the only one at O’Dea who competes in rowing. Senior rower Eli Hough also competes in rowing competitively.

Hough states, “Rowing takes another level of commitment mentally and physically.”

Stoulil and Hough have seen each other’s row before and have nothing but positive comments towards each other.

This was able to bring Stoulil and Hough together for a closer friendship.

Furthermore, the transition from basketball to rowing wasn’t just a sports change but it was also a challenge to see how well he could adapt. Stoulil also showed he can battle through adversity through this whole process.

Rowing also helped Stoulil’s ability to grow as a person. Stoulil’s ability to not give up and keep pushing. Stoulil was also able to discover new capabilities within himself.

Nate Stoulil's journey exemplifies the transformative power of sports, extending beyond the realm of physical prowess.

The switch from basketball to rowing not only presented athletic challenges but also became a crucible for personal growth.

Stoulil's ability to adapt and persevere through adversity speaks volumes about his character.

Rowing, with its emphasis on fundamentals and technical precision, provided a unique platform for Stoulil's development. The supportive coaching team, pushing him beyond his limits, became instrumental in refining his rowing stroke.

The sport demanded a mental and physical commitment that Stoulil embraced wholeheartedly, competing actively in tournaments, and showcasing his newfound passion.

The bond formed with Eli Hough in the world of rowing deepened their friendship, highlighting the positive community within O'Dea.

Stoulil's story goes beyond a mere sports transition; it's a narrative of self-discovery, resilience, and the enduring impact of embracing challenges.

Through rowing, Stoulil not only honed his athletic abilities but also discovered untapped facets of his inner strength, leaving an indelible mark on his journey of personal evolution.
