From Hoops to Helmets

On a summer day in Seattle in 2020 8th grade Davian Sherlock is at home thinking of what to choose from: the sport he played his whole life or a new sport that he finds interest in.

"I think I'm going to switch it up," says Sherlock coming into his first year of attending O'Dea.

He started off his athletic career playing basketball. His initial thought of playing football seemed weird at first, then he realized that was the missing piece to him excelling in his sport.

Sherlock started his freshman year at O'Dea in 2021. He played basketball his whole life but this year he decided to play both football and basketball.

His first year he played on the freshman football team.

"Football was always a thought because it showed who I was. I always loved the aggression and I could always be aggressive on the field and not get in trouble."

Sherlock's sophomore year was different though. He had decided to stop playing both sports and stay dedicated to one. He thought hard about the decision and football it was.

"It was a big move but I really wanted to take football seriously and in order to take it serious I had to drop basketball."

The transition wasn't as difficult as he thought it would be.

"It was honestly smooth since all I like was football I just always had a thing for it I just needed to try it."

Going from no experience playing for a team in football, Sherlock has built his dedication and focus. He is now on the varsity undefeated Metro League championship team. His O'Dea Fighting Irish are having a phenomenal season so far as they head into the playoffs.

Sherlock is a major part of the team's success, as he starts as a cornerback on a tough defensive squad and has played receiver on and off this season.

Despite his achievements on the field, Sherlock misses his old sport and even hints at a possible return to the court.

"I missed and I am looking forward to playing this year".

But until then, his focus will be on helping his team win their first championship since 2017.

The Irish will face off in playoffs this weekend against Liberty High School.

This is Sherlock's last chance.

They have everything on the line lose and you're out.

Will the Irish be able to take it home?
