From Gridiron to Scrum

SEATTLE - Every athlete has a unique journey in the world of sports, but some stories are more extraordinary than others. Meet Kai Holec, the towering 6'8" athlete from O'Dea High School who's taking the sports scene by storm, not only on the football field but also in the rugged world of rugby. In a tale that epitomizes versatility and adventurous spirit, Holec's path to discovering rugby is a story worth sharing.

While Holec is primarily known for his prowess on the football field, it's his introduction to the world of rugby that has everyone talking.

"I really only started playing rugby last year. I have really enjoyed it so far and wish that I had found it sooner," Holec mentions with a spark in his eye, reminiscing about his initial foray into the sport.

Holec’s introduction to rugby came courtesy of a chance encounter with a friend and fellow athlete.

"I found out about rugby because of Brady McHugh. He came up to me in the lunchroom after last year's semi-finals football loss," Holec recalls with a smile. "I think he really intrigued me because he told me that I got to run the ball, which was very funny, but also, I like him as a person."

Sometimes, all it takes is one enthusiastic friend to open up a world of possibilities. Despite his mother's initial reservations, Holec attended a single practice session to test the waters.

"I went home and told my mom, who was so against it but said I could go to one practice, and if I loved it, I could continue. The rest is history."

Holec's journey on the rugby field has been nothing short of remarkable.

Despite starting later than many of his peers, his natural athleticism and tenacity have allowed him to excel. Playing for the Eastside Lions, he takes on the roles of both tight and loose head lock, and occasionally, he even finds himself on the wing if his team requires it. His adaptability and versatility on the field have made him a valuable asset to his team.

Holec is modest about his achievements, stating, "I don't have a lot of accolades besides being a state champ. I didn't try out for USA or NW all-star teams even after invites."

However, his impact on the rugby pitch goes beyond trophies and titles. The Eastside Lions made their mark last year when they clinched second place in the Florida Select Tournament, an impressive feat for a team that faced off against all-star competition.

Holec's story serves as a testament to the idea that it's never too late to discover new passions and talents. His journey from the football field to the rugby pitch is a shining example of the rewards that come with embracing new opportunities, even when they seem daunting at first.

With his towering presence, both on and off the pitch, Holec has become an inspiration for those who know him. Not only is he a formidable athlete, but he's also a smart and cool individual who exudes sportsmanship and camaraderie. As he continues to grow and excel in the world of high school sports, one can't help but wonder what new heights Holec will reach in the years to come.
