SEATTLE - In the hushed tranquility of the golf course, where every swing is a story waiting to be written, the O'Dea High School golf team's narrative this season is one of transformation and triumph. It's a journey that reflects the growth, perseverance, and unwavering spirit of a young golfer, Matthew, who has seen his game and his mindset evolve into something truly remarkable.
O’Dea had a pretty level season this year with standout performances from Carter Gribble Patty Mahar the only ones going under par in a match this season.
The biggest win of the season for the Irish came against a strong West Seattle team who was scoring 150 going into the match while O’Dea was scoring 130, O’Dea eventually came on top winning 128-118.
In a recent interview with junior Matthew Livingston future O’Dea golf captain and constant low scorer for the Irish Livingston talks about his season and his teams' journey throughout the spring season.
Livingston talks upon his personal season and how he as grown as a player over the year. "Overall, my mindset and focus on the course has greatly improved. Being my third year on the team, I am getting more and more comfortable with playing in matches. The nerves that I felt Frosh. and Soph. year gave some results that I wasn't too happy with. Although this year, my comfortability and determination throughout this season made for some great improvements.” Livingston is already a polished golfer on the course, although he is still looking to improve his game like every athlete strives to do.
The Irish had a quite varied year in ages on the team with sophomore John Pokorny being on varsity and Christian Skally sophomore as well being on junior varsity. The team also had three strong seniors Carter Gribble, Joey Meats, and Patty Mahar.
Livingston talks again about what he thinks the Irish can do next year to help the team improve on years to come, and next year help the Irish make the playoffs. “Staying consistent and focused during our practices will help us improve. I think that Golf is a sport that requires constant tweaking to make improvements so when we don't practice outside of our school practices, we lose a little bit of that skill. Golf is also a sport that requires total concentration and when we find ourselves distracted, we need to get back on track and keep grinding.” Even thought the Irish had a subpar season this year they are looking for better results next season instead of this year's 5-4-1 barley scoring over .500.
This year had a highlight with Patty Mahar shooting an 84, shooting 10 over and 4 under the cut.
Even though This season was a dissatisfaction in the eyes of the Irish, O’Dea is looking for a redemption season next year with future senior Livingston leading the charge for the Irish golf team.
