SEATTLE -- Ryan Berta shares his experience as a leader on two varsity teams during his sophomore year and the valuable advice that helped him overcome the challenges of leading on two highly competitive teams.

Berta has been a significant contributor to both the cross-country and soccer programs throughout his tenure at O’Dea.

In his freshman year, he achieved the remarkable feat of qualifying for Metros and districts in cross country and being part of a state semifinalist soccer team.

However, accomplishing these milestones wasn't a walk in the park for Berta. He grappled with pre-game jitters and race-day nerves. As a leader, he strived to set a positive example.

These anxieties began to dissipate when his cross-country coach, David Boze, shared a piece of advice: "Don't worry about things”

This straightforward guidance helped Berta navigate high-pressure situations, such as state playoff soccer games.

Berta's commitment to not worrying extended beyond significant games but into personal struggles. During cross country season, he suffered an overuse groin injury that crushed his hopes of qualifying for the state championship.

While this setback was devastating Berta used it as motivation to excel in the upcoming soccer season. Not only did he secure a spot on the varsity soccer team, but he also emerged as a natural leader for new team members.

As he enters his junior season, Berta aspires to assume an even greater leadership role on both teams. Currently, he serves as the right-hand man to cross country captain Seku Sanders and plans to serve as a role model for the talented incoming freshmen in the spring soccer season.

Reflecting on his goals for the cross-country season, Berta stated, "I just want to see my brothers suceed."

Berta has advice for underclassmen aspiring to become leaders on competitive O’Dea teams, Berta stated, "Work until there is no reason to worry, O’Dea taught me to work for what I want in life. So, if you want something go out and get it."

Berta's main goal is to inspire others to step into leadership roles, just as he did. But beyond that he just wants to see his brothers succeed.
