SEATTLE- The fighting Irish baseball team closed their regular season this last Monday. They ended the season with a 17-3 record, and they clinched the 1 seed in metro. The Irish also had the best record in the league.
The Irish baseball team has been special thus far. They have the most talented team in the state on paper. The question is can they continue to use that talent and work hard?
This team has been led by seniors all year. they have 14 seniors on the team and that Is ultimately the recipe for success: experienced senior leaders.
Pitching has been outstanding for the team so far. The Irish have 3 players in the top 5 for ERA in the metro league.
Senior Patrick Galvin says, “Us pitchers have really put in the work. Our goal is to try to be as efficient as we can. We want to make the other team beat us, and not beat ourselves by walking people or not throwing strikes.”
Galvin is certainly right. In 20 games the Irish pitching staff has only allowed 29 runs. That is nearly 20 less runs than the closest team West Seattle with 48. The ERA for the staff is just under 1 at 0.99 which is crazy.
The Irish offense has also been successful this season. The first ten games were outstanding. The last half of the season they started cooling down. Going into playoffs though the last two games they have put up 6 runs each game. They lead the league in total runs scored with 128 and led the league in XBH with 45.
Senior Vaughn Lowe says, “We had a lot of success early. We need to remember our approach from the first half of the season and be able to get back to that. We are making our way there after our last couple games.”
The Irish have a chance to bring home a metro championship and ultimately a 3A state title with the talent they have.
The Irish earned themselves a bye in the metro playoffs. They play this Saturday in the quarterfinals against the winner of Seattle Prep or Bishop Blanchet.
