A lot of freshmen look up to Mentor Group captains at O'Dea because they set the bar of who O'Dea wants you to grow into over your four years. I interviewed Dylan Smith, a junior, because he is a Mentor Group captain in Waterford House, and I asked him what made him want to come to O'Dea high school in the first place. Dylan originally came to O'Dea for sports and a fresh start with new people, but he said when he got to campus, he realized that O'Dea is more than just new people and athletics. He felt a sense of culture, he liked the way everyone supports each other, and he fell in love with O'Dea.

Dylan has played varsity lacrosse the past two years here at O'Dea, and he has made many memories with the team already, he says. Dylan mentioned gaining so many different traits from the coaching staff and teammates around him.

What made Dylan want to become a mentor group leader at O'Dea was that he really enjoys the role of being the leader of the mentor group. Dylan said mentor group is a valuable part of O'Dea because you have a lot of personal interaction with other students in different grades. He likes being a Mentor Group captain because he loves interacting with his peers and making sure they are doing well mentally and physically; Dylan supports everyone in his mentor group by trying to make them their best selves.

When we asked him what his favorite thing about being a mentor group captain was, he responded, "My favorite thing about being mentor group captain is the ability to make a positive impact on the experience of those around me in arguably one of the most important development stages in their young lives. I really take pride in my job attempting to make the experiences at O'Dea as positive as possible for my peers and having the opportunity to help is amazing--I am truly grateful for my position."
