Self-Portraits
The Photography/Yearbook class started the school year by creating their own self-portraits using either Photoshop or Canva. They also provided an explanation as to why their self-portrait represents their identities.

For my portrait I chose 3 things that I identify with. To start with I chose a beach background because I enjoy going on vacation with my family, especially to places with nice beaches. I chose to put music notes for my hair because I enjoy listening to music. For my shoulders I put a picture of the space needle because I am born and raised from Seattle and that shows a lot about who I am as a person.

For my self-portrait I chose Mt. Rainier since I am from Washington and Mt. Rainier is a staple and big part of Washington. I chose a football field to cover my body since football is a big part of my life. I chose waves for my hair since I have short hair and waves are a type of hairstyle. I chose a black hole since I thought it looked cool.

For my portrait I chose the mountains in Sun valley as the main background as that’s where my mom’s from and I have gone there twice a year my whole life. I’ve gone on many hikes and camping trips in the surrounding mountains like the Sawtooth's. For my lower body section, I chose East beach, a beach in Chesapeake Bay which is about 15 minutes from where I’m committed to play lacrosse at in college.

My body and the background of my picture is from Fortnite because that is my favorite game and over coronatine I played that game all the time
My face is a soccer field because that is my favorite sport and I like watching it
And my hair is candy because I love eating candy.

At the beginning was trying to blend different shapes with contrasting colors to create a more abstract image. How ever I started using a tool that stiches elements of the picture into new areas of the frame. I thought this was interesting and had good results blending different shapes together, but once I started using it on my face, it turned into more of a body horror. Ime pretty happy with the end result and particularly appreciate the shift from geometric shapes into the mangled face while having recognizable elements such as a shirt collar acting as a transitional point.

For my portrait I decided to use a football field, sunset, and ocean in my picture. I chose a field that had football and soccer lines on it to show that I play both sports. I put the sunset on my hair just because I love sunsets, and I thought it would look cool on my head. And for the background I put and ocean beach background also because I love the ocean.

The pictures and objects I put in my portrait are important to me. I put the American flag as the background because my dad's side of the family all fought in the military. I chose mount rainier because my great uncle used to climb Mount Rainier a lot. Finally I chose earth for the hair because I live on the planet earth.

For my portrait put the background red because I feel like I'm on fire this year in a good way and for my hair I but the forest this symbolizes it's hard to maintain and control and sometimes it can get crazy, as for my face I wanted to put something from my islander culture, I did half water and half grass for my jacket this shows that I'm feeling very smooth and energetic and I never stop moving and growing.

The picture i chose and put into my photoshop include the seahawks stadium, the space needle, a picture from the ferry, and a track field. These images define my identity because it shows I live in Washington, and I am a runner. For my personality this shows that I enjoy the spirit of Seattle and the spirit of running and i enjoy these things mostly because Ive grown up with them but also because they bring me joy and fun memories. This also shows apart of culture because track connects to Odea and that is a culture I'm proud to be a part of as well as the culture of Seattle that ive been apart of troughout high school.
Dominic Stone, '25
For my photo, it shows me with hair of flowing lava, the forests of Washington on my shirt, and the Earth in my background. I chose the hair primarily just because it looks visually impressive, as well as my favorite color being red. The forests of Washington represent the place where I was born and reside. Finally, I picked the Earth as my background from my passion to travel, see, and learn about the world we live in.
